Driving Vision Check
Clear, comfortable vision for safe and confident driving.
Many drivers notice changes in their vision before realising they may benefit from an updated prescription for driving.
If you experience glare, reduced clarity or discomfort when driving, a comprehensive eye examination with discussion of your driving requirements may help improve comfort and confidence behind the wheel.
Prescription sunglasses may also be beneficial for daytime driving.
Signs Your Vision May Be Affecting Your Driving
You may benefit from discussing your driving requirements during your eye examination if you notice:
1. Headlights appearing overly bright at night
2. Increased glare in wet weather
3. Difficulty reading road signs
4. Eye strain during longer journeys
5. Difficulty focusing between dashboard and road
6. Reduced confidence when driving in low light

Driving Places Unique Demands on Your Eyesight
Driving requires more than simply being able to read a number plate at 20 metres.Modern road conditions demand accurate distance judgement, rapid visual processing and the ability to manage glare from artificial lighting and weather conditions.Safe and comfortable driving vision depends on:
Peripheral awareness
Contrast sensitivity
Glare recovery
Distance judgement
Visual reaction time
Many drivers are legally able to drive but may still experience visual discomfort that affects confidence and performance on the road.
Why Modern Headlights Seem So Bright
Many drivers notice that modern headlights appear much brighter than they used to, particularly on darker roads or in wet conditions. This is largely because many newer vehicles use LED or high-intensity headlights, which produce a whiter and more focused light than traditional halogen bulbs. While this can improve visibility for the driver using them, it may also increase glare for other road users.Changes in our eyes over time can also make us more sensitive to bright lights at night, meaning headlights may feel more uncomfortable than they once did.

Lenses Designed for Driving
Contrast-enhancing options
Certain ZEISS and Seiko lens designs are developed to support visual performance in challenging driving environments, particularly in low light or high-glare situations.
Your optometrist will advise whether these options may be appropriate based on your prescription, driving habits and lifestyle requirements.

Specialist Options for Regular Drivers
Seiko RoadClear
Seiko RoadClear coatings are designed to help reduce glare from oncoming headlights and improve clarity in low-light or night-time driving conditions.
These coatings may be incorporated into dedicated driving spectacles for patients who spend significant time on the road.
ZEISS DriveSafe
ZEISS DriveSafe lenses are developed to enhance contrast and support comfortable vision in demanding driving environments, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.
Tokai Night-Optimised Options
Certain Tokai lens designs may also be recommended for patients who experience discomfort when driving in low-light environments.
Tokai lenses can be individually tailored to prescription and lifestyle needs, and may incorporate coatings or design features intended to support contrast and clarity when driving.
Dedicated Driving Spectacles
Where appropriate, some patients choose to have a separate pair of spectacles specifically suited to driving conditions, in addition to their everyday lenses. This may help improve visual comfort compared to standard lenses used across all activities.

Daytime Driving and Sun Glare
Bright sunlight can significantly affect visual comfort behind the wheel, particularly when driving in open environments or on reflective road surfaces. Reflected glare from wet roads, windscreens and surrounding vehicles may increase eye strain and reduce visual clarity.
Many patients benefit from having a dedicated pair of prescription sunglasses available for daytime driving conditions.
Prescription sun lenses can be tailored using options from manufacturers such as ZEISS, Tokai or Seiko where appropriate.
OCCUPATIONAL DRIVING
Driving as Part of Your Work?
For patients who drive regularly as part of their occupation, visual demands may differ from everyday use.
Extended time on the road, frequent transitions between distance and dashboard viewing, and challenging lighting conditions may increase visual fatigue
.In some cases, having spectacles specifically suited to occupational driving needs may provide improved comfort compared with general-purpose lenses.
Advice on eyewear suited to workplace and occupational use is available as part of our Vision and Lifestyle services.
What Is the Legal Eyesight Requirement for Driving in the UK?
In the UK, drivers must be able to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres in good daylight conditions, with glasses or contact lenses if required.
This is the minimum legal standard set by the DVLA.
However, being able to read a number plate does not always guarantee comfortable or safe vision for all driving situations. Night driving, glare from headlights, wet roads and changing light conditions can place additional demands on your eyesight.
Regular eye examinations help ensure your vision continues to meet the required standard and remains comfortable for everyday driving.
